This story not only exemplifies the power of partnership, but demonstrates NPHS’ work in the community. Dawn Romero is a single mother of two boys and has always had a dream of owning a home. Dawn was referred to NPHS from the City of Pomona to participate in NPHS’ homebuyer education program. While receiving her homebuyer education at NPHS, she learned of a home that NPHS had for sale. NPHS purchased this particular home in partnership with the City of Chino. It was purchased from Wells Fargo through the National Community Stabilization Trust. NPHS rehabilitated this home, constructed a new garage and integrated green building components such as drought tolerant landscaping and energy efficient appliances.
It was love at first sight when Dawn saw this home. Dawn told NPHS Homeownership Specialist, Ingrid Buono, that this was her house. Dawn was determined that she and her two boys were going to own this home. Dawn went through the qualification process and Ingrid had to break her the news that she unfortunately did not qualify to purchase this home. Instead of getting discouraged, Dawn met with Ingrid and asked, “what do I need to do to own this home?” After working with Ingrid to clear up some debt and saving for a down payment, Ms. Romero was qualified and able to purchase the home. On September 27, 2012 the Romero Family successfully closed escrow and will be celebrating the holidays in their very own home.
“This house could not have gone to a more deserving family,” stated Marisol Garcia, NPHS Real Estate Services Manger. “With the combination of Dawn Romero’s hard work and the help of the City of Chino, Wells Fargo and the National Community Stabilization Trust, Dawn now has a safe home to raise her children in.”
